UltraMote® Software Setup & Operating Instructions – V3.3

 

 

Thank you for your evaluation/purchase of UltraMote® Universal Remote Software for the Pocket PC. Customizing UltraMote software to meet your needs is an easy process that does not require separate setup software on your host computer.  First, gather up all of the remote controls for the devices at your first location, then get ready to customize UltraMote software with the looks and commands organized the way you want for your location. Here is a typical setup sequence for a den or living room entertainment system:

 

CREATE NEW DEVICE/ACTIVITY SCREENS:

 

1)     If you haven’t already installed UltraMote software on your Pocket PC, please refer to the Installation Instructions.

 

NOTE: Non-iPAQ users should go to the PocketPC Settings>>Connections>>Beam page and check the box to enable infrared reception, which in some models also enables transmission.

 

2)     Select Device>>New from the menu bar at the bottom of the main screen. A text entry box with keyboard will appear.

 

3)     Select the text entry box by tapping with your stylus. Using the on-screen keyboard, enter a name for your device or activity. PLEASE NOTE: This name will be displayed on a tab at the top of your screen, so shorter names or abbreviations (i.e. TV, VCR, DVD) will allow more tabs to be displayed without scrolling. The tabs will be displayed from left to right in the order in which they were entered, so you may want to start with your most used devices or activities first.

 

4)     You can choose the screen graphic or “skin” for each of the two screens you have for your current device or activity. The available skins are displayed if you tap the arrow in the list box by the appropriate Screen (first or second screen for the currently selected device) box. New skins can be added or changed without need to relearn the buttons. The skins can be added by placing the skin files in the Program Files/UltraMote/Skins directory of your Pocket PC. Skin filenames for the first and second screens should begin with “1-“ and “2-“, respectively.

 

NOTE: Audiovox Maestro/Toshiba e550/e570/e740 and Fujitsu Pocket LOOX 600 Users – The internal infrared port is on the side of your device, so we did include some horizontal skins intended to support evaluation (the internal infrared range on the Maestro/e570, e550, and Pocket LOOX 600 is very short). Most users will probably want to utilize an UltraMote Extender® and take advantage of the built in CF socket. Please keep in mind that any buttons learned in the horizontal skin will need to be renamed to their appropriate vertical position number, or relearned using a vertical skin.

 

5)     Each device or activity has two screens. The first screen has up to 24 user buttons and one dedicated “next screen” button. The second screen has nine more buttons for less frequently used functions and a dedicated “previous screen” button. You can enter text which will appear beside each of these nine buttons on the second screen in Device>>Edit.

 

 

TEACH ULTRAMOTE SOFTWARE YOUR DEVICE/ACTIVITY COMMANDS:

 

1)     Get the appropriate remote control(s) for the device/activity screens you wish to program.

 

2)     Make sure that you have selected the tab position of the desired device/activity. Use the hardware buttons to advance either one screen to the left or right, or jump to the end of your device/activity range.

 

3)     Select Learn from the menu bar at the bottom of the screen.

 

4)     Select Start from the Learn menu list. You will now see a brief listing of the learn instructions. Press the OK button when you are ready to continue.

 

NOTE: UltraMote software offers 33 buttons per device or activity. You do not need to program all of the buttons. You can add buttons later or even reprogram the buttons you have already created. While UltraMote software Learn mode is active, you will see your Pocket PC LED flashing as a reminder. Button locations which have been learned are displayed normally. Buttons which are available for learning a new command are dimmed.  You may also program the Up, Down, Right, Left and Center positions of your Pocket PC Hardware Navigation Button (a.k.a. Joystick). For some models, the Up and Down buttons are also available on the left side of the unit. The Up/Down Hardware Navigation Button can “auto repeat” according to your selections in the PPC Settings>>Buttons>>Up/Down Control screen.

 

5)     Push the desired UltraMote software button, and you will hear an audible start tone. Aim your remote control at your Pocket PC infrared receiver and press the desired remote control button once – a quick tap only as some remotes will begin autorepeat if the button is held down.

 

6)      If UltraMote software does not receive an infrared signal within a few seconds, you will see a timeout message (you can then repeat this step for the same or a new button or even switch device/activity screens to learn additional buttons). If UltraMote is unable to properly learn your device command, you will see an error message asking you to retry after UltraMote adjusts several learn parameters.

 

NOTE: Most Pocket PC devices learn best when the remote control is held 4-8 inches away from the infrared window.  With the Toshiba e550, you may need to move the remote closer, in the 2-6 inch range.

 

 

7)     Repeat steps 5 & 6 for each of your desired remote commands. You may even switch device screens without exiting the Learn mode, to program additional devices and/or activities.

 

 

8)     Be sure to exit Learn mode, which will stop the LED flashing and return the device/activity screen to operating mode.

 

 

USING ULTRAMOTE SOFTWARE TO CONTROL YOUR DEVICES:

 

NOTE: If you are using UltraMote software without the UltraMote Extender card, please make sure that you have Internal selected in the Main>>Output menu.

 

1)     Select the device or activity screen by pressing the appropriate tab at the top of the screen, or by pressing the hardware buttons on the left or right side of your Pocket PC navigation button/joystick. The first button to either side of the joystick moves you one device/activity in the same direction. The second buttons to either side of the joystick moves you all the way to either end of your device/activity set.

 

2)     You may choose between the two device activity screens by pressing the “Next” or “Previous” buttons at the bottom right corner of your display.

 

3)     Aim your Pocket PC at your equipment, and press an UltraMote software. You will see the button highlighted and a virtual LED on your Pocket PC tab screen will flash. You will also hear a sound, if you have enabled send sounds in the Main>>Send Sound menu (and you have sounds enabled for programs in your Pocket PC main settings screen).

 

4)     OPTIONAL: You may change Send Sound from the supplied tone by replacing the file, located in the Program Files/UltraMote folder, with another .wav file of your choice. You must rename your new sound file “Send.wav” and replace the supplied tone.

 

 

MAXIMIZING YOUR CONTROL RANGE WITH ULTRAMOTE SOFTWARE:

 

NOTE: Pocket PCs and PDAs in general are optimized for data communication according to the IrDA standard. This standard utilizes a slightly different wavelength, different modulation frequencies and is intended for short range communication. UltraMote software utilizes advanced signal processing to compensate for many of these variances, depending upon the limitations of your specific Pocket PC design. However, UltraMote software without the UltraMote Extender, will generally have a shorter control range than the remote control that came with your device. Please try out UltraMote software during the evaluation period, to ensure that the control range with your equipment is satisfactory. Here are some additional steps you can take to maximize the UltraMote software control range:

 

1)     Make sure to aim your Pocket PC towards the receiver window of the device you are controlling.

 

2)     Make sure that the receiver window of your equipment is clean and unobstructed.

 

3)     If you desire additional range, check out the UltraMote Extender at www.ultramote.com, or several external IR/RF devices are available on the market. For example, UltraMote software has been tested with the Recoton DSC IR-100A, which is sold at BestBuy, Blockbuster and other retail locations.

 

 

USING THE ULTRAMOTE EXTENDER :

 

NOTE:  The proprietary UltraMote Extender is intended for use only with UltraMote software and only while installed in the iPAQ 3xxx series single CF slot expansion sleeve (standard or Plus models) or the built-in CF slot on supported devices (currently Audiovox Maestro, Dell Axim X5, X50 & X51, HP iPAQ hx4700, Toshiba e550G, e570 &e740 and Pocket LOOX 600).

 

1)     For 3xxx series iPAQs, insert the UltraMote Extender card into the CF slot in the expansion sleeve with the label facing outward (toward the thumb notch). For supported devices with built in CF slots, insert the UltraMote Extender with the label facing outward (toward the back of the device). Audiovox and e570 users may want to prop open the flexible CF cover using a toothpick, paper clip, or similar object.

 

2)     Start the UltraMote software. 

 

3)     Select Main>>Output>> and then in select External(CF) in the Output Select Menu.

 

4)     When you remove the Extender card, return the Output Select to Internal.

 

 

 

CREATING CUSTOM SCREEN SKINS FOR USE WITH ULTRAMOTE SOFTWARE:

 

NOTE: Check www.ultramote.com for additional tips and resources for creating skins for use with UltraMote software.

 

1)     Using any popular desktop graphics program (i.e. JASC Paintshop, or even Microsoft Paint), set up a 240 pixel wide by 245 pixel high image. Depending upon your Pocket PC, your image will be displayed with 4096 (iPAQ H3600, H3700 series) or 65,536 bit color resolution. Please adjust your image settings in your graphics program accordingly.

 

2)     Setup a grid on your image with a spacing of 48 pixels wide by 49 pixels high. You should now have a grid of 25 cells, which correspond to the 25 buttons on the first screen of any UltraMote software device/activity.

 

3)     You can now either draw or import images for both the individual buttons and backgrounds. You do not need to utilize all 25 button locations on your UltraMote software screen. For example, you could layout a screen with only five screen-wide buttons, then learn one or all of the 5 button locations within your wide area to the same command.

 

4)     When completed, save your image as a BMP, JPG or GIF image, depending upon your image quality vs. memory availability.

 

5)     You may repeat these steps for the second screen of your device/activity, but remember that the center 3 rows of the 240x245 grid are not active buttons, and are reserved for text which you entered during device setup.

 

6)     When you are done with your screen images, use ActiveSync to move them to the Program Files/UltraMote/Skins folder on your Pocket PC. You will now see your new images displayed as a menu option in the Device/Activity>>New or Device/Activity>>Edit menu.
